Default Laptop network problems

Hello,
Basically my problem is that i cannot connect to the internet in my new apartment in Beijing. I tried connecting through PPoE with a cable from the wall running into my laptop.
I have a brand new HP Pavillion DV2065ea, with a Nvidia networking controller, i have a broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN wireless card.

I created connection but i just cannot connect to the internet i get some "cannot connect to the remote computer" error. My friend tried using his laptop, with my cable and had no problem connecting. I thought maybe it was a problem with my computer so i decided i will just use my wireless instead of using the network card because i have been able to come into other people's wireless network. I bought a router and set it up correct. i can connect to the router but i can still not get on the internet.
well thats my problem if anyone can give me some tips or if anyone knows any solution i would be forever grateful. Really want this to work now.
Thank you

Hey there markusahl, welcome to PCHF

Firstly, let's check that the basics are in place:
If you’re using WinXP, you can configure your network controller by right-clicking the Network Connections icon from the System Tray and then clicking Open Network Connections. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Properties. Scroll to and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then click Properties. Select the General tab and then click the radio buttons in front of Obtain An IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically. Click OK when you’re done.
