Hi my daughter received this message today on her computer. dont have too much info, i'm sorry. I know it is a gateway and her brother purchased it in 2003. It is (was) running windows xp.

she used it yesterday or day before, and it was fine. she had storms today,, didnt think power went off, but she wasnt at home the whole time during storm.

she received this message when she turned it on this afternoon.
any help or suggestions? help greatly appreciated.

oh and one more thing,
she cant get to safe mode and doesnt know if she can get a basic dos prompt, neither of us are that good,, she can get to her set up screen though.

Hi angpace,

if she has her windows xp cd, then it will be fine..get her to insert the cd into the cd drive and boot off it

Once it's finished copying files and preparing setup, enter the Recovery Console (there should be a clear optionf or this)
It will ask you a question where it only has 1 answer (which is c:windows)...it gives you the option of 1. c: windows
It will ask for an Administrator password, which if you have no password, just push enter.

This should give you a DOS command prompt (similar anyway).

1) Type in d: and push enter.
2) Type cd i386 and push enter
3) Type expand l_intl.nls c:\winnt\system32\l_intl.nls

Let me know how this works or if you need a clearer explination.

thanx garhar,, when her brother gave her the computer, he couldnt find the xp cd,, she is looking now to see if he ever did find it and give it to her,, she cant remember lol,, is this the only solution? of course the warranty is expired, so without spending megabucks, gateway is no help.

It's the only solution for her to get it fixed right "now".

But, if you want to, you can burn the file onto a cd, or copy it onto a floppy disk, and just copy it (from the Recovery Console). It works just as well.
