Default sfc refuses to work??

After reading the thread on sfc i thought i would give it a go. I put my windows disc in which came with my computer and ran the command. It started to load up and begin the check but then came up:

Files that are required for windows to run properly must be copied to the DLL cache.
please insert your Windows XP Professional edition CD now.
In more information it says that the problem is either a windows product is the wrong product or the cd is broke.

Well i skipped that one and it came up again. The only windows disc that came with the computer is the home edition which i have installed.
This aint urgent just is really confusing. Windows seems to have a personality disorder. I dont think it know which one it is!!!

Hi auron11x!

Right-click 'My computer', click 'Properties'.

What does it say under System?

Blue

You can try to direct the sfc to C:\WINDOWS\i386 instead of the windows cd to find the needed files, or you might need a windows xp disc with sp2 included on it.

sfc is probably looking for windows xp sp2 files wich are not on the normal windows disc.

I don't know why it asks for a proffesional disc though, but have heard of it happening before.

The wierd thing is that SP2 was on my PC when i bought it (havent downloaded it), so unless i have been given a disc without SP2 on it and it should, Windows is seriously screwed up! I dont need to use sfc at the moment so will keep looking for a way round it.

Here here auron11x!

screwed up to the wazzah!

A clients machine of mine required a sfc done...but they bought the computer 2nd hand and didn't have a disc, so we used our volume liscence copy to run sfc...it worked fine until one file and it asked for Windows XP Pro, and we had the Windows XP Pro SP2...
and it was the file that was needed....grrr stupid windows.

The CD you've been given would be the SP2 for Home, so that's fine. As to why it's asking for XP Pro...it's just MS being MS...try running it from Safemode maybe.
