Default New computer running slow

Hello. I have a new Compaq a few months old. It never did seem too fast right out of the box, so I started getting rid of the **** that didn't need to be there such as the ads for aol and msn, that kind of thing. I also used the PC WORLD magazine to tweek this and that trying to speed things up.

Well, it seems that nothing helped too much. Actually, its worse, because overnight it has bogged down so much that it is ridiculus. Just starting My documents can take almost a minute.

Sometimes, I hear the hard drive working when it should be idle. Now, I don't know if I've tweeked it to the point of being screwed up or if I've got a bad guy or two in there. I've run AVG, Spy Sweeper, and Ewido and not found anything. Those scans take up 100% of the system resourses and over 2 hours to finish.

Oh, Spy Sweeper has been telling me that all my shields are off when they should be on, and when it loads at startup it tells me that the installation is bad and that I need to reinstall.

I have submitted a Hijack This log.

A bunch are still there, probebly Spysweeper intervered with fixing them.
Normaly I would ask to temporarely disable Spysweeper but since you mentioned it was damaged it is probebly easier to uninstall it, then fix the entry's with hjt and then reinstall Spysweeper.

Run HijackThis , select to do a "system scan only" and then place a check beside each of the following:
(after uninstalling Spysweeper)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://ie.redirect.hp.com/svs/rdr?TY...rio&pf=desktop
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
Now first close all windows and browsers other then HijackThis , then click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

After that reboot your pc, and post a new HijackThis log please.

Looking good sofar, you hjt log is clean now.

Now the question is, has it helped with the problems you had? I'm afraid it wont since nothing on there was nasty enough to cause them I think.

Click on the 'Afterwork' link below in my sig, and try the steps in part 6 to see if that helps.

Thanks Joe5 for the help. Unfortunately, if it helped, it was minimal. Booting up takes forever; starting applications is real slow; playing music is distorted; and the defragmenting last night took just about all night to finish. I reinstalled Zone Alarm as suggested and the second time it loaded I got the message about the installation being bad and to reinstall again. Could that be from the extremely slow start up? Any ideas?
