Default LAN trouble

hi there, i am new to this forum so i am hoping that i have posted this in the right place. ok so where shall i start???

i just got a brand new modem from orange/wanadoo this morning and getting all excited about setting up my 8mb connection from 512kb. and then i shove the install disk in and start to install it, connected the modem correctly and everything and it says ''cannot detect modem, make sure you have shut down firewalls'' so i did do that several times as well as restarting my computer but the error kept on arising. and so i did figure out the problem, and it was i haven't got the 'local area network' icon in my network connections area, all i have is my speedtouch connection for my 512kb broadband. and so i tried to install a new connection, make one and even make a floppy disk to install a new LAN connection, but nothing happened, it says that it has completed but nothing has popped up and it still remains the same.

if you can please help me then this would be super, i don't want to phone up anybody which will cost me money and probably wait on the phone for ages. thanks you guys and hope to hear from somebody.

tom.

Hi tom!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Is the modem connected through USB or Network cable?

Blue
