Default PC turns itself off while loading OS

Hi, when I turn my PC on (a relic of a PIII 800MHz with 256Mb RAM) it goes through all the BIOS screens ok and then stops on the Windows XP Pro Start Up Menu screen.

It says that the PC wasn't shut down properly and gives me the boot options of Safe Mode, SMode + Networking, SMode + Command, Last Good Config and Normal. Whichever option I select, it seems to continue booting up but then turns itself off after a few seconds. Sometimes the Windows logo will appear and the blue bar will scroll underneath for a while and then it goes off and on occasion it can just go straight off.

The strange thing is that if I just leave it sitting on the start up menu after getting rid of the countdown clock it will just sit and sit there all day. Does this mean that it's Windows causing the problem of the actual PC.

By the way I've checked the PSU in another machine and it's working fine. Also I haven't installed any new hardware or software recently either.

Any suggestions??

(Hope this makes sense too)

Hi there ScottyBoy, welcome to PC Help Forum.

If you have checked the hardware and you cannot get into Windows by any method then I would suggest a non-destuctive Repair Install: How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install - This will re-install XP without comprimising your existing saved data on the drive. You will need to re-apply Windows updates after this procedure.

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

Forgot to mention, I don't have an XP disc...

Then you aren't going to be able to fix this I'm afraid. If you have a re-build disc from your PC manufacturer then you could try that...otherwise, you're going to need a disc and a valid license key.

The PC was a home build so no re-build disc. Could possibly get my hands on and XP disc and key though

Thanks for your help, appreciated!
