Default [Resolved] How to remove windows xp update KB917422

Hey, the windows update KB917422 stops certain securom games working. I first noticed it with Fear Combat ( The free F.E.A.R Multiplayer) and then Flatout 2 and Titan Quest. I've also seen people saying the same things on different forums and saying remove the KB917422 update.
So I go to add and remove and it says This update cannot be removed.
I went into safe mode and it still said the same.
So how can I remove it? I don't want to reformat again! (3 times in 3 weeks)

Thanks

Do you have "show updates" ticked at the top of the Add/Remove programs window?
Do you have a recent (before the update) System Restore point that you could use?

Hey Hengis

Yep I have that ticked and I have no system restore points previous to the update installation. Do you think a format would be the quickest and easiest solution?
Then when it asks me to do the updates I can just untick the KB917422 update.

Thanks

It's a troublesome update (KB917422) - even in MS words! I can't understand why you can't just uninstall it....

What is the exact message you receive?
Do you have administrator rights in your user profile?

When I click on it in Add and remove programs, writing under the name says "This update cannot be removed" and there is no remove button.
I'm wondering if there is a conflict with the updates somewhere.

Thanks.
P.S Thanks for the fast replies

I think the re-format option is looking likely...I just found this on the MS site:

You cannot remove updates that were installed by using the combination installation method unless you reinstall the operating system. Reinstalling the operating system overwrites the updates.
