Question Unmoutable boot underscore

My daughter tried loading her computer and as it was starting windows XP it came up with "Windows has found a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage to your computer" Unmoutable underscore Boot underscore volume.

She tried several times and got the same thing she could not even load up in safe mode. She then tried loading up using XP cd but even though she had gone into bios and changed her first boot to cd drive it still comes up with the same.

What can she do???

Hey custard_pot!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Although I'm sure one of the experts will have a look at this soon, let's try what I can do.

Once you've set the BIOS to boot from CD, you'll have to press a key during the computer's start-up, to boot from the XP CD.
Of course, you have to make sure you got your XP CD in the drive.

hi custard_pot. and welcome to the PCHF!

I've seen this error a few times before, and I believe it's something to do with the boot.ini file which can easily be rebuilt without actually reinstalling windows.

Give me a few minutes and I'll quickly do some research and double check if what I remember is correct

Thank you for your reply. I had seen that site and it is a file and not cable problem but she has tried puttin windows XP in her cd and altering her bios so it boots from the cd as it say in that article but it does the same and comes up with the fault.

We have decided to either use the boot disks I downloaded or to put her drive in another computer to get the files she needs off then deal with her drive.

I think the latter might be the best option as she cannot afford to lose some of her files.
