Default Network - aoltsmon problem

I just used MS’s Network wizard (on a 2002 Micron PC 266mhz P4 running XP Home) to set up a LAN connection for file sharing (no HS internet connection). I therefore selected “other” on the appropriate screen and when finished with the wizard, rebooted. Following the reboot, aoltsmon.exe began using huge amounts of cpu time and memory to the point that machine (I’m using my laptop to post this) is at a crawl and effectively disabled. Using task monitor to end aoltsmon.exe is useless since it immediately restarts. Additional reboots did not help. What happened and how do I fix it?

Welcome to PCHF

Do you still use AOL as your ISP?

Yes, it's cheap, my daughter likes it & it has parental controls, but I'm about ready to toss it. Obviously it has its problems (and most of my online time is at work with a real internet connection).

Whatever the problem with my PC is, after doing end task about a half dozen times in quick succession I got aoltsmon to stop running, however both AOL (9 or 7) and Eathlink will now not work. AOL won't log on; Earthlink logs on but can't find any web pages.

aoltsmon.exe

High CPU usage, even when AOL isn't running. As an AOL user you should in general leave this task alone. If you are an advanced user and do not use AOL’s own browser but use, instead, a browser like Mozilla or FireFox which both have inbuilt web acceleration caching of the type used by AOL TopSpeed technology, then you can disable this service.
I would suggest that the first thing to do is to uninstall and re-install the AOL software..then test.

It wasn't possible to leave it running and still use the PC. Simple tasks were taking minutes instead of seconds or split seconds to run, and eventually it would hang the system. My status right now is that with AOLTSMON disabled (using admin serviices) the PC runs normally except that neither Earthlink or AOL work. AOL won't log on (it dials out & tries to log on but returns an error suggesting diabling firewalls); Earthlink logs on but then can't find any web pages. As far as I can tell I've successfully disabled all firewals without it helping. Two other possibly related pices of info: the PC was hooked tot a D-Link ERB-2310router/switch (which was hooked to nothing else) when I first ran the wizard, and beginning with the 1st reboot after running the wizard I also started getting "Mobile Device Properties" popup on booting warning "The TCP/IP network transport is not installed".
