Default Strange Lines down my screen while booting, then it crashes

Hello,

I hope someone has an idea what the cause of my problem is, and can help me out . Anyway, here's the problem:

When I start up my computer, everything is as normal, except there are these lines running down the screen in the background, it looks a bit like this:

IIII IIII IIII IIII IIII IIII
(except they run the whole length of the screen)

They change colour according to the background also, on the black loadup screen at the start of booting they are green, and then white at the Win Xp loading screen.

Anyway, they don't seem to affect the situation too much...but then the real problem occurs:

Just after Win Xp is finished loading, and the screen moves towards the Log-In screen, where I would type in my password etc. The images collapse and all the colours blur together...there are hundreds of smalls squares i guess, basically everything loses its shape.

Then the screen goes black. The computer remains running also.

This is definately not a problem with my monitor (I used it on another PC and it worked fine), and i've tried taking out and putting back in my RAM modules, as well as my video card.

I'm really lost for clues on what is the cause of my problem, and how to resolve it .

Hope someone can help, thanks for your time

Hi and welcome to PCHF,

The first thing you could check is that the fan is still running on your graphics card. Could be that the graphics chip is overheating. Have you overclocked either your PC or graphics in the past?

I havn't, I don't even know how

Forgive me for sounding so stupid, I really know very little about computer hardware issues :P, but how exactly can I check if the graphics fan is working properly? I'm guessing I just run the PC and listen for the fan coming from the card...should I run it with the case off so I can visually check it?

So we can rule out overheating. That's good, although your video card could be failing. Is there any way that you could try another card in the PC?

unfortunately no, i could always buy a cheap compatable card to test it, but that will take some time, is there anything else i could look at to try and find the source of the problem?

thanks for the quick responses btw

Do you have an onboard graphics card as well?
