Question [Answered] XP processes

Hello everyone!

I need to understand what I am looking at when I open the Task Manager in XP sp2. After clicking on the "Processes" tab, I see a long list of .exe program names, many of which I have no idea about what they do. Is there a list somewhere that describes what each of these processes does?

What started me wondering was watching my laptop's hard drive light stay on almost constantly after the PC appeared like it had fully booted up and before I had started to use it. When I opened the Task Manager, I saw that "HelpSvc.exe" and "WMiprvse.exe" was using all of the available CPU time. What are these programs and what do they do?

I suppose I feel like many of the readers of this forum. It seems like the PC is more in control of itself than I am. How do I regain control? How do I use CPU time only on the programs I need the PC to execute?

All comments welcome and thanks in advance.......Matt

hello bluesmatt

i use www.processlibrary.com to find out what my processes are for here is a description of HelpSvc.exe. helpsvc.exe help service for Windows 2000 and later. This process initiates a pop-up screen whenever you press the help button and here is WMiprvse.exe.

wmiprvse.exe is a part of the Microsoft Windows Operating System and deals with WMI operations through the WinMgmt.exe process. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

hope this helps
