Trying to help a friend many miles away. Can someone tell me how to reload windows XP without losing information on the hard drive. Unable to get into System Restore. Or could you direct me to a web site that may help in this area.

Hi Yank, and welcome to PCHF

If your friend is unable to backup anything (from windows being corrupt or something similar) then below is probably the easiest way. But if your friend CAN load windows, and just have the means to backup - buy a dvd burner and blank dvds (extremely cheap) and start backing up.

If your friend has his copy of his XP cd, he can do a repair install.

Boot from the CD, and when setup is ready, it will say "Press Enter for new install" or "Press R for Repair install" (or words to that effect).

This will delete the windows directory on the hard drive, and install it again.
