Default Exception Privileged instruction error(0xC0000096)

I have a computer that is giving me the following error:

"iexplore.exe - Application error: The exception privileged instruction (0xC0000096) occured in the application at location 0x7CA2264A"

That's an example of the error I get. Although it's not always iexplore.exe and of course that memory address(0x7CA2264A) changes as well.
It pops up everytime an application closes.

I've tried chkdsk which fixes some errors, but continues to find more everytime I run it, not sure if that makes any difference. I've also tried registry fixers, virus scanners, spyware scanners, etc.. no luck

The computer is a TOSHIBA Satellite M60 running Windows XP Pro

Any suggestions and ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to the forum, firstly, are you running any type of Anti-Virus product on your laptop and if yes, is it up to date?

Thanks for the warm welcome.
Yes it's running NOD32 anti-virus and it should be up to date, I'll double double check that though, I seem to remember it being an older version and having some problem not update correctly. I did run the Trend Micro online virus scanner though and it came up clean.

Run a FULL error checking scan on the drive (as I fear this may be where your problem lies). Make sure you select both of the "auto" options. Then, after, defrag the drive and re-run the scan. Post back your findings.

Hi Slowfib,

Try seeing if you can find something with Drivesitter, this is a pay program with a 30 day fully functional trial. If the hard drive is the culprit hopefully this will lead to us knowing if it's a mechanical problem or not.
