Default [Fixed] is THIS possible?????

Somebody on the m.e forum mentioned upgrading my m.e to xp and as i mentioned a bit belatedly ..I actually have both on different pc`s......
And being as i just managed to reinstall the m.e from the copy on the disk it got me to thinking about THIS..... my old & infirm XP.....
On one or two occasions it has requested that i insert cd to replace DLL files but i dont have the cds....BUT like my m.e this too has a copy of itself on the disk(in the 1386 folder)
I have run the sfc /scannow function and it proceeded to request even MORE of these elusive DLL`s(about 20ish?)
My next hurdle is the fact that this pc has had SP2 upgrade SINCE purchase hence it wont allow me to reinstall straight from the WINNT32.exe as im "USING A NEWER VERSION blah blah blah"
Ive gathered that there are programs out there that overcome this problem by "slipstreaming"xp with sp2(i think thats the correct term?)but the first one i had a quick look at"autostream".....seemed to imply that i`ll need the xp cd to do THAT....SO im back to square one..........OR AM I???????
Surely if the system required dll files i should be able to point it in the direction of the 1386......i CANT directly from the scannow function as it only gives the option of "retrying"from cd.....
Can ANYBODY make sense of what im getting at here???????
If you can i`d really appreciate it...........

I fogot to mention that i should apparently be able to use the sfc /scannow and point it towards the location of the 1386 directory to just replace the missing dll files BUT no matter what i click the sfc will not give me an option to point it towards the ANY location...
There is numerous info about doing so on the "AK LEO"site(no xp cd)but what he says should happen DOSENT....but there is many comments from those that COULD so it must be possible?

Hi XPOD,

The SFC function (System File Checker) scans for any files that have been corrupt or are missing. The idea behind this is that you can recover your system from certain types of attacks. The reason SFC limits you to where you can chose these files from, is more of a security thing, in the way that the files cannot be replaced by another corrupt or tampered with file.

In short, to successfully complete a SFC scan in windows xp, you need the cd.

Hey Guys,

Sorry Garhar, it is possible to redirect the SFC utility. It is a matter of a few registry changes, this will be a good one for us to work on together, because it may be a number of things causing the problem. Before going into the specifics tho...

@Xpod, my welcome to the forums to you as well. Can you please tell us what you have tried, exactly, so far, it may also be that you have a malware infection that is keeping you from access.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

LGW

Default been there DONE that

Hi people, cheers for taking an interest.......im still quite new to pc`s but i just love problem`s...
Anyway ..with regards to the sfc being changed you might find this useful..

http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html

Anyway ive checked my registry values as per the article BUT i still can not access ANYTHING via sfc......I STILL get asked for SP2CD-ROM

But apparently the sourcepath for the sp2 files is correct too....

Back to squre one eh????Sorry i too some time

PS...i do require pretty "verbose"instrcutions...IF any......(it`s easier to follow)

All i want to do is replace the missing dlls sfc reckons are missing OR even use the WINNT32.EXE in the 1386 directory to reinstall the thing.......
I cant do THAT cause im told im using a newer version.....WELL i think the jist of it all can be gathered from my first post on the subject.......

IT`S annoying me now.....and i aint having THAT
