You could shut off the lowdiskspace warning with the attached reg file , but im not sure if that is the thing to do. Imo those instructions are incorrect. Even though the paging file will be a fixed size , im not so sure if it is such a good idea to use the full size of the partition. Even when it is just used for the paging file then i think you still should have atleast 10/20% free space. And as you noticed using exactly 1024/1024 doesn't even work.

So either set the paging file to something like 800 , or use the reg fix below.

C:\Program Files is fine

and Yes, there is a way to shut that message up
and you should have more hd space for the page file, as it will increase in size when being used.

Removing the message is a small registry "hack", if you're comfortable doing it, go for it. But i strongley recommend you don't browse around the registry and play with settings...this is Windows Life Blood...if too much is changed that shouldn't be...you'll have to start all over again.

To remove this irritating pop up do the following:-

1] Start -> Run -> Regedit
2]Now navigate to the following location:-
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
3]Right Click on the blank area of the right pane of the registry editor and create a new DWORD Value by selecting New>DWORD Value.
4]Name this newly created DWORD Value -"NoLowDiscSpaceChecks"
5]Now double-click on the new DWORD and assign it the value 1.
6]Close the registry editor and restart the system.

Thanks a ton for all your help guys, I really appreciate it

EDIT: I tried to remove the pesky message, but it came back when I restarted the computer! I checked, and the value is still there, so thats not the problem...

You can manually change each time a piece of software is installed.

I'm pretty sure you can also change it permanently, I'll do some quick searches for you.

EDIT: Found another registry tweak...again - becareful

You can also modify a key in the Windows Registry to change the ProgramFilesDir value: Click Start -> Run. Type in regedit, and scroll to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion]. Change the value of "ProgramFilesDir" to the desired directory. Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Hey Guys,

This needed to be moved to it's own thread, EXCELLENT question Connor. I asked Merlin the same thing when he wrote it, the extra space is to accommodate the registry growth expected during the time you own your computer. As Joe mentioned it would be awful to run out of space after only a few months, and one of the biggest problem with Windows is its dependency on the registry requiring it to become bloated.

Just for future reference, if you want to post a question about an older thread, just copy and paste the URL for the thread you want to refer to, and start your own thread. We want everyone to get the attention they deserve in the most timely fashion.

Do you literary mean the size of the registry itself? If he said that then i don't think he intended that..

I can't even imaging what you would need to do to get a registry the size of 1GB , let alone 15gb..
:o :o

My registry is 28.4kb.

Hey Joe!

I was referring to the percentages, not the typo. LOL . I thought it was an excessive percentage considering the actual space that XP needed as well, and couldn't figure out what all the rest was for. Sorry for the mix up.
