I suggest using Mozilla Firefox, or another non Microsoft internet browsers. But these days it's mostly down to personal preference.
Regarding your download files not working, do you have a virus scanner that scans the files as you download them? I know this kind of scan used to cause alot of errors while downloading in Internet Explorer, where the file size would be incorrect with the original file size and not be able to open. There should be an option somewhere in MSN Explorer to tell it where to save the files by default. I'm not too familiar where this would be, as I've never used MSN Explorer before. I'm sure one of the other gals/guys here will be able to point you in the right direction for that one.
