Question Crackly Sound

have a packard bell imedia 1404 and i have recently been experiencing problems with the sound on my computer.

it comes out all crackly and distorted. i can even hear this noise when no sounds are actually being played. I don't think it is the speakers because they worked fine in another computer and i still hear it with headphones plugged into my computer.

I believe i have on-board sound as there is only a modem card in my pci slots. Is this right?

I have attached a .rar file to this message which contains a .wav sound file which is a recording of the sound it ouputs. It is not brilliant quality (bit deeper sound) but you willl get the picture!

Please can someone help thanks in advance, upgrader764

Hey Upgrader,

Great idea sending the recording, much more descriptive than words.

Regarding your sound, if you don't have a separate card then Yes it is onboard. Did anything unusual happen prior to this sound starting? Did you install anything in the PC? A new card or anything?

Can you get a hold of a sound card to see if the problem is the onboard sound? If you can, install it, and plug your speakers into the card, instead of the onboard.
Do you plug and unplug your speakers and your headphones into and out of the same plug? The connection may have become loose in the plug.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

- Nothing unusual happened.

- Nothing installed in the pc. Nothing.

- I can't really get hold of a sound card without spending any money, plus i don't really want a sound card just onboard sound.

- No i have tried unplugging the speakers. And i have tried using the ports on the front of the pc and the back with no different result.

Also i have tried uninstalling the drivers for sigmatel C-mAjor audio and reinstalling but the sound still occurs.

thanks

Hi Upgrader,

It sounds as if the onboard sound of your MOBO is going. You may not have a choice regarding going to a sound card.

If you are getting the sound from both the front and rear jacks, you have verified that your volume controls are set correctly, and there is no possibility of the jack having been damaged, it sounds as if it is failing.

I'll get a second opinion from one of the hardware gurus tho. Let me PM them, and keep an eye out for their posts.

Hey Upgrader,

I sent the PM out to the hardware gurus. If you don't see a post in say a day, would you please post here and tell me? Thanks,

After extensive reviews of FAQ's/issues on PB's website... I can only suggest that the onboard sound portion of your motherboard may be going.... UNLESS you have recently changed your PC's location (using a diiferent wall socket) or you've connected something else to the same socket as your computer.(especially --a flouorescent light?) it almost sounds like a "flourescent hum") Fortunately.... a basic PCI sound-card-- enough to give you very basic stereo sound-- is as cheap as $11.00 and simple to install. It is SO cheap that it's not even worth trying to troubleshoot your existing hardware-- unless it's an interference issue as I previuosly mentioned.

if you insist on trying to fix what you have... it does cost money for Packard-Bell support.

I don't suggest it, personally-- much easier/faster/cheaper to replace
