Default my windows xp crashed need help backing up

Ok, my computer crashed last night, all the data is there just the installation of windows is corrupted. I need to access the computer to backup my data i cannot loose it! I cannot create a new partition as there is no space left to create it with without reformatting the harddrive. I bought a 250GB external usb harddrive to backup on but i need a bootable program or method you can give me to help. I tried using knoppix but it just says an error, 'cannot copy' when i copy from one hard drive to the other. I unticked the read only boxes on the two drives within knoppix so i now need another method.

Please can you help me because it is driving me crazy!!!

Hi Dtwarez,

Welcome to PCHF, we have a wonderful team of techs here, and I feel certain that we can help you get most of your data. My apologies for the delay in getting to your thread.

First of all, does the PC boot at all? Do you get any response? MOBO error code beeps? Can you boot into Safe Mode?

What OS are you using, and while you are at it, can you please post Make/Model/Specs on the pc and current HDD?

How are you determining that the Windows installation is corrupted?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
