I want to have a lan party for Counter Strike and I am not to sure what I need I was reading on how to setup a Lan and I did'nt understand. We want to set up the lan with just internet cables. Also I would like to run a cable from my downstairs to my upstairs for internet and I dont know what to get.

not sure what your getting at.. If you want two or more pc,s to share a connection , get a router.. 4 port linksys works great providing your cable changes to a cat5 cable comming out of the modem..thats what i use

if you have a switch, with an uplink port, you can put your internet cable, that normally runs from your modem to your computer, into that port

then each computer that connects to that switch will have access to the internet.

internet cables...i'm guessing you mean the cables that are around 5mm in radias that travels between the network card on your computer and modem...these cables are generally blue, but can be other colours as well. this is the cable that chessman21 as cat5

Yea it helped do I need a router to just set up a lan with no internet? Like to just connect say computer one to two and two to three and lead them in a circle or do I need to connect all computers to one by router?

in the old days, there used to be a 10mb network style with cable similar to the cables that plug into a tv from the ariel. You could do it with that, but this network system is so obsolete now, if 1 computer unplugged from the network it would cause the rest of the computers to not see each other.

With todays network technologies, the best way you can connect 2 computers together without a switch or router, would be a crossover cable, which can be bought from any leading computer outlet near you. However, as you want more, you will definatly need either a router or a switch, regardless of if you have an internet connection or not.
