Am having a problem getting HP software (newly installed HP 4890 scanjet) to recognize scanner (MS Scan Wizard works OK - so I think driver and hardware are OK - device mgr has no X's or ?'s)
HP Tech Support feels that it's a Windows problem left over from previous scanner/software (Epson) that was installed but is now removed. (I installed the HP scanner/software on another PC - a 'virgin' PC - i.e. it never had any scanner installed - with no problem.)
I tried creating a new user (administrator) and installed from there (after logging on as the new user) - but had same problem.
MY QUESTION IS: Can I just install (new or update - which?) from the Windows XP Home (SP2) CD (that I used to install initially)??
(The CD is NOT an OEM version - it's a 'retail' version that I installed a few months ago. I just tried the initial 'startup' from the CD and was given the choice of UPDATE or NEW INSTALL - neither of which looked right.) I don't want to 'lose' the progams (or settings or drivers) already installed. (All data is on a 2nd HD.)
Thank you!.

Hi PC911,Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here, and I feel certain we can get this scanner up and running for you. First thing you need to do is relax it's gonna be alright . I apologize for it taking us so long to get to your post, we have a lot of staff on vacation at the moment. I think we should take a look for traces of the Epson that may be causing the problem, can you please download RegSupremePro from my signature. I would uninstall any of the HP software that you have been trying to get to work, as well as disconnect the scanner. Make sure that you don't have any other programs running. Then install and run RegSupremePro, it will want to make a backup of your cache, let it. Then click on the Registry Cleaner tab, choose Aggressive. When it has finished, click on Select, choose All. Click on Fix, and let it fix everything that it finds. That should take care of any left over Epson entries. Now reinstall your scanner and software. Please make note of any messages that you receive during the install process that are unusual. Looking forward to your reply, TTFN LGW
