Default Cannot install windows xp

I have a problem with my sons [homebuilt] pc. When I try to install windows after a certain amount of time I always get the stop error screen with the message "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" with 0x000000d1.

This system has worked in the past and the hard drive has been Formatted.
I have removed all ancillarys exept cpu, ram and hdd.
The mobo has the latest bios and the windows dvd is fine [works on another pc]
The system is: Albatron km18g pro
athlon xp2700 + [factory 'sink and fan]
maxtor 80 gb hdd
HYNIX PC2700 RAM.

The ram came out with no errors when i ran a bootable memtest program.
I'm stuck now and don't know what to try next.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

is it the same point that the error msg keeps coming back? if so, which point?

i would suggest trying some different memory anyway, just to be safe...windows xp seems to have a problem with even the slightest dodgy memory, when trying to install it

one thing you could try, is to find some memory, and if it works, complete the install, then put the old memory back in - it should work fine. Make a ghost image of the hard drive, so that if you ever need to reinstall windows, you just load ghost, and away you go - takes 15 minutes as apposed to 1.5 hrs

No, it seems to be a specific amount of time that the pc has been installing rather than a specific point in the install. e.g. if i leave it on the end user agreement page for a while it will hang and I have to reset.
I have tried different memory and only using one stick but no luck.
I Have had this system running sweetly with the same components but my son updates the graphics driver without using driver cleaner pro and thats when the problems began, so i copied his save games and tried to reinstall, doh!! big mistake this time!!
I suspect that the mobo is shot but would like a second opinion before spending more dosh.
I shall be taking your advice about ghost when i get it sorted. Thanks.

hey,
Is it possible that your xp cd is broken ? (just a sugestion) I remember trying to install xp but it kept stopping at a specif time. So i copied my original xp cd and used that to install the windows and it worked perfectly

I have used the dvd to install on another pc and it works fine.
I have even tried using the matched pair of crucial ram sticks from my pc but it only got halfway through formatting the hdd.
I think i'll bite the bullet and buy a new mobo [maybe i can wangle an upgrade for my machine at the same time!!? lol]

Ok! Yippee! I found the cause. It must have been the hard drive, I put it in my pc as a slave and formatted it then back in the other pc as master and xp installed like a dream. Guess I have no excuse for an upgrade now though!
