Just to add, I think the shift button has also been affected. I can't select one item in a list and then hold shift down and select another further down as it doesn't highlight all inbetween. It's really annoying me now.

I would be irked. LOL.

Let's try deleting that CTFMON entry, and then doing a sfc utility scan.

With your OS CD in the drive, Click on Start, Run, type in
sfc /scannow
Hit Enter. The System File Checker will search for and replace any damaged or missing system files.

I'll look forward to your reply,

TTFN

This is infuriating, the cd drive on my laptop doesn't work because it's so old. I've not used it for ages and it used to work sometimes, but I've spent the last half an hour blowing it and trying to get my cd to work but it won't. Also, the cd with xp on is a recovery cd which came with the laptop, because the laptop came with xp already installed. I'm not sure if that has something to do with it? It says wrong cd has been inserted, but it says that when I don't put one in at all, so I think it must just be the cd-drive, because the cd doesn't load like it should when I put it in.

Grrrrr! It was going so well, I typed sfc /scannow and it did a little scan, and then it all went down hill!

Any other ideas?

The XP cd really sounds like your best bet. Can you get your hands on an XP CD image, or an external drive?

Hey Guys,

@Gymtyrant, thanks for helping out M8

@Littlejones, it is possible that the pc has a section on it where the majority of the cab files are kept. If you start the sfc /scannow utility, does it ask for the CD?
As far as the CD being a restore CD, as far as this utility is concerned, that doesn't matter.

Can you please post the make/model of the PC for me? Thanks,

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Hi there,

Sorry I've been away from my computer for a few days. My laptop is a FUJITSU-SIEMENS AMILO D 8820

When I run SFC/SCANNOW it does ask for the cd, although when I cancel it it says it can continue but it may cause problems without the cd. I have access to another laptop, but not an external drive, so if there is anyway to get the files onto the other laptop and then send them over then that could be an option?

Thanks again for all the help.

Hey Littlejones,

If you run the sfc utility, w/o the CD, does it give you information about what is damaged or missing? Usually it does.

Looking forward to your reply,
