Default Memory issues

a friend of mine has had to go thru several Windows reinstalls in the past 6 months. The blue screen of doom shows up at boot and the computer will not boot into Windows. The shop keeps saying its the hard drive, but i have been told it could also be the memory. Is there a good way to test the memory for problems? (obviously it can be physically looked at for damage, but is there a way to test the memory itself?)

Hi there, best way is to put it into another computer that supports that supports the same type of ram and see if that computer receives the same error, also you may receive the error due to your computer not being able to support the ammout of memory you have inserted into the computer, e.g you have too much memory and your computer can't handle it. If you post your friends computer specifications, e.g make and model, windows operating system including service pack, the ammount of ram and the graphics card im sure we will be able to help. Hope this helps yours Dave

I dont know too much about his computer, its an IBM Thinkpad laptop that he bought a couple years ago. I think it has a pIII/celeron chip, not sure about ram capacity or HDD space. Its a either a 12 or 14 inch screen, i dont know the model number. He bought it used at Computer Renaissance. Running Windows 2000 with all updates.

Ok then, so i recommend he tries different ram in it, then see if it starts up, also if no luck he may need to end up re-installing windows as you said it may be the hard-drive

Default about the hard drive

If it isnt the hard drive, would it help to run something like SpinRite on the drive? Like i said, this is a recurring problem.
