Default No proxy is good proxy

I've always left all proxy settings how I found them on all my computers.
Recently, I bought some new ones. During set up, many internet-related programs failed to use certain features (mostly file downloading within an installer) because of 'proxy settings'.
I checked the settings against those of my other, working computers, and they were set the same way: off. What do I do?
The settings that work on one computer don't work on another?
The only place I see to change the settings is within the browser. (firefox of course)
So...am I missing anything? What do I need to do?
It's not a major problem, but it also stopped my XP product activation when I installed XP from working. (Legal copy of XP. Don't get all excited.) Luckily, the activation program has its own proxy settings, which DID work after I turned off al proxy settings.

Anyway. Any ideas?

Hi Gymtyrant,

Just curious, is it possible that the licsense is over used for that CD?

Also, did the new PCs come with OS installed? Are they running the same version of XP as your other PCs?

Have you done all of the updates?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

Nope. Each comp has its own install of xp. However, I have used those copies on other computers, which I have since wiped and gotten rid of. If I move a copy of xp to another computer, does that invalidate something?

The new comps came with 98, possibly 98 SE. I ran an upgrade on both of them to xp.

When microsoft says I update, I update.

But as I said, I set all the proxy settings (built in to the xp activation program, which I used because the activator built into the install didn't offer the option to alter proxy settings) to 'off'/'automatic'/whatever. XP is activated and working just like it's supposed to.

But I the new comps are running different versions of xp than my old ones, but I've used the copies before, and they seem to work...This 'new comp, old comps I've gotten rid of, old comps I have, xp versions' things is getting complicated...if something contradicts itself, just tell me and I'll try again to get the story straight!

But when I try to employ the same tactic in firefox/online installers, I still can't connect. I can view websites, but programs can't automatically download. Notable examples are installing 'logmein', a browser-based remote-control system for computers on broadband, or using firefox's built-in plugin installers.

Thanks for the post!

Hey,

OK, then if all of the installs went well, and you are able to do all of your upgrades, then perhaps this is a Firefox setting issue.

What versions of XP are the new PCs using, what version are your old PCs that are working properly using?

Looking forward to your reply,

I think it is Firefox. I set IE (yuck) as my default browser, turned off IT'S proxy settings, and all was well. It's not a major issue...maybe I'll just wait for an update, and switch to IE when necessary.

The two new comps are running different OS versions, so I don't think that's related to the issue. The newest one is Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2. The old PC's are also running multiple different versions, some Pre-installed on the system, some installed by (trusted) freinds, some that I bought and installed myself...Anyway. I'm quite sure it's not my XP version.

Thanks so much for your help so far!

NP Gmtyrant,

I think you are right, it doesn't sound as if it is realted to XP. Especially since IE is working.

Have you uninstalled, completely, regcleaning afterwards, FireFox, and then reinstalled it to see if that helps?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

I guess I can try...what do you suggest for regcleaning? (I've worked with it before, usually with disastrous results)
