Arrow 2 of 8 shared drives inaccessable

I've got my hard drives (letters D to K) shared so one other computer on my network (via ADSL Modem Router) can see them. However, the two first drives (D & E) have suddenly been renderred inaccessable.

They are still selectable in the list of network places, but computer 2 double-clicks them, it get's the "you don't have the right..." error, and when I double-click them, nothing happens.

I've tried right-clicking and going to the Sharing option in Windows Explorer, Unsharing them (D&E disappear from Network Places), and re-sharing them again. However, I just get the same problem. They're listed, but can't be opened or searched by either of us.

If I open D & E through My Computer or Windows Explorer, all is well. It's strictly in Network Places where they're inaccessable.

I don't know why it's just these two drives that aren't working, but I should mention that they're both IDE drives on the same cable, while all the rest are SATA drives plugged into an add-on card.

Hi there Jen and welcome to the forum,

Firstly, if you can explore the contents of the drive locally then I don't think we're looking at a hardware/cable issue.

You say it changed suddenly, can you remember any changes you made to either PC prior to the drives becoming inaccessible from the remote PC? How are the permissions set at the moment (everyone/specific user) ? Did you try re-mapping them as shared drives from the remote PC? Try creating a new account on the remote PC and give that user rights to those drives to see if it is an account based problem.

As for what happened, it was either the replacement of the old D drive with a new one (via Acronis True Image), but then that doesn't explain why E became innacessable too.

Also, my router spontaneously decided to give both PC's new IP's via DHCP. One of the things I tried was changing the IP's back to what they were originally, but that so far hasn't helped.

Oh, and how would I adjust permisions for other specific users from my PC?

If you only have 2 PC's on that network then give them static addresses from the routers range. The IP address change wouldn't have prevented you from browsing the drives..seeing them, yes but not browsing them.

Can you ping the IP address of the 1st PC from the remote one?

I can ping my PC from theirs, but that's all.

I tried turning off Simple File Sharing in Windows Explorer, and the settings are the same for all other drives. Maximum allowed, Permissions set to Everyone (Read, Change, Full Control), no firewall, etc. In the list of permissions in Advanced, I can select stuff like Administrator, Everyone, Power Users, etc... but I can't select the PC's on my Network, or the names attributed to those PC's. Is it possible to do this?
