Default chkdsk /f unspecified error while resetting recovery information

I got blue screened while trying to upgrade RAM and chkdsk did it's thing on the next go around but hit an "unspecified error while resetting recovery information". Now the volume is flagged as dirty and chkdsk comes up and gives up in the same spot. This is step 3 of 3 so it must be pretty close to cleaning it up to its satisfaction, but boom it gives up and there I sit. I've done a diagnostic on the harddrive and it passed all tests. So I'm wondering if there's a utility out there that is just a little bit more potent than chkdsk to fix this problem.

Would appreciate any help I can get. I did search the forums for something along this line but nothing quite matched.

Hey CaptainCorc!

Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Can you give us some specifications?

Also what kind of RAM are you trying to update and what is your OS?

Bluefish

It's a Dell Dimension 2400 with the most recent BIOS Dell offers and the most recent video driver Intel offers. It's running WinXP Home Edition sp2. It has 128 meg of PC2700 sdram and i was trying to add a 256 meg stick. Not sure what else you want to know, but if you like i can attach a whole bunch of info from a Belarc Advisor run.

Thank you for your reply and I'm hoping to get this rectified without reformatting if possible.
