Default Problem with headphone sound

At first, I thought that all my headphones just managed to coincidentally die on me after only a week or two of usage. Usually, one of the earpieces will stop emitting sound (usually the right earpiece). So, I originally thought it was a problem with my headphones.

However, today I bought headphones (they cost me over CAD$20, so they're not of bad quality), and from the moment I plugged it in, the right earpiece hasn't been working.

Anyone know what the problem is, and how it may be remedied?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Hi Mike,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a terrific team of techs here and I feel sure that we will be able to get your sound back to normal.

First of all have you made sure that all of your updates are current?

Have you installed any new hardware or software lately?

Is this something that occured all of a sudden or gradually over time?

Have you tried both the front and rear jacks if you have both available?

Have you checked your audio settings, and if so, make sure that the balance is set properly.

Do you also have this same situation occur on your desktop speakers?

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN

They're not current.

Have you installed any new hardware or software lately?

Just a few games... would that affect sound?

Is this something that occured all of a sudden or gradually over time?

With some headphones, the right earpiece gradually dies over time (but some of the time I can temporarily restore the dead earpiece by tilting my head to the side), but as is the case with my newest set of headphones, CAD$21, the right earpiece NEVER worked, and I only bought the headphones today, brand new, from Source by Circuit City (formally known as Radioshack).

Have you tried both the front and rear jacks if you have both available?

For some reason, the back jacks produce much quieter sound than the front ones, and my headphone cords aren't long enough to reach from the back to where I sit.

Have you checked your audio settings, and if so, make sure that the balance is set properly.

The sound on all things is set to maximum and the balance is set in exactly the middle in all cases.

Do you also have this same situation occur on your desktop speakers?

My speakers work perfectly fine, but people in my house have extremely sporadic sleeping schedules so I must rely on my headphones. And, whenever only one headphone piece works, when you take the headphones off your head, it leaves you with a slight headache, for which reason I do not know.

Hi Sanehouse!

My welcome to PC Helpforum!

Could you try the rear jacks, only just for a moment?
It's possible that the front jacks are not connected fully OK to your mainboard.

I guess your speakers are connected to the rear?

Blue

Nah, I unplug my headphones when I want to use my speakers and just use the same jacks.

Ahh that's strange.
Do the headphones still work on other devices?

That's odd... They don't work on my stereo, either.
