erm... if Xp Pro suddenly deceides it wants a password to log on and you ... erm.... can't remember it.... is there.... erm.... a way to re set or bypass it?

Welcome to PCHF. Have you set an adminstrators password? If not, then what you can do is restart your computer and tap <F8> a number of times. That will bring up a menu. You will want to choose to boot in safe mode. When Windows boots up you can go into the control panel and click on user accounts and you can change the password in there. Hope this helps.
