Default Reformatting issues (windows vs. linux)

Hello,

My friend's computer stopped working and they asked me to fix it. I dont know when or why it stopped working, but when loading windows XP it seems to load fine until the windows screen before the user log on comes up; then it freezes. She doesnt care about the information, so I figured that I would just reformat. When I inserted the Windows XP system disk there was a similar problem. It will load all of the necessities into memory when booting from the disk, but it always freezes when it says it is starting Windows. So I was not able to reformat this way, but I was able to install a working copy of linux (Ubuntu distribution) on this same computer. However, I am sure that she does not want to use linux, so I tried to install Windows again after this reformatting, thinking the problem would be gone. It still persists though, and I also tried Windows 2000 which fails at the same point. I dont know what to do now, other than train her in how to use linux. Any ideas?

Thanks!!
