Default [Resolved] big problem!

hello,

i have a sony vaio vgn fs295vp, and i accidently eresed my complete harddrive (was trying some linux things out). now luckely i had mad a complete backup on dvd's with nero burning. so, i boot from the backup dvd's and a nero restore programm shows up. i am able to let the program restore the backup dvd's on harddrive, but when finished it sais: REBOOT NOW FOR USE OF RESTORED SYSTEM. but when i reboot nothing happens, just a blinking cursor in the upper left corner of my screen.

i tried allready to boot from a windows xp cd-rom and ran the fixmbr command in restore mode, but this doesn't seem to work.

is there anyone who has got a solution for my problem?

great thanks in advance!

Jan.

Hi Jan,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful group of techs here, and I am sure that one of them will be familiar enough with the intricacies of your backup program to guide you through.

Unfortunately, I am not that person, but I will PM them now and one of them will be back with you shortly.

Keep an eye out for their posts.

Hey Jan!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Have you made an image of your whole harddisk with Nero?

In which stage of the startup process does the cursor show up?

Blue

Hey there hubertus,
  • What version of Nero are you using?
  • Do you still have linux stuff installed on your drive, e.g does your computer think it is running a linux OS?
From what I have seen, and you can correct me if I am wrong, is that when you use the Nero backup it asks you which files you would like to backup.
You select them in the list (explorer type window) and then tell nero to back them up onto CD correct?

If this is the case then that explains why when you restore nothing is happening.

You are going to need to reload your windows OS, so let us know if you are using XP home or XP pro. (that is if you require help doing so)

Once you have reloaded windows then you need to install Nero and then restore your backup CD's.
I don't recommend that you restore the following folders:
  • C:\WINDOWS
  • C:\Documents and Settings
The only thing from the documents and settings folder that you would require is your profile. That contains all your music/pictures e.t.c

If you need anything explained further then give us a shout.

hi,

i think it was nero 6 i was using
now i have running linux as os, for now...
in nero i could choose from: backup files and folders, or backup entire hdd.
i picked the second, so i didnt had to pick any files or folders, just the hard drives i wanted to backup.
it seemed to me, by doing that i would backup my entyre system, os and everyting included.
otherwise it wouldn't be useful to be able of booting from it, would it?
so as said before, when my hdd is completely eresed, i put in the backup discs i made with nero, my laptop boots from it after selecting the hdd i want to restore my discs it takes about three hours to have the restore utulity of nero (no other os or program involved) doing ist thing and, according to the messages i get from it, restoring my system.
when it is done with it it says:
remove the disc, and reboot for use of restored system.
but when i reboot: nothing but a black screen with a blinking dos kind of cursor in the left upper corner of my screen. not able of typing or doing anything.
after that i tried many things: rebooting of windows xp disc and enter recovery console. there i tried the commands fixmbr, fixboot, fix"whatever", but nothing seems to be able to make my "recovered" system to work.
so as a temporary solution i installed linux.

i called allready the company of my laptop, and they can send me recoverydiscs for my computer to restore it to its factory settings and installations. that will cost me about 80€... so if i can find another solution i would be very glad.

i think that those discs i made with nere do put windows and everything back on my hdd, but that the problem has to do something with booting correct.
because when there is no operating system (tried that as well) it says: no operating system found, but here it just says nothing.

Default FDisk

Hi Hubertus,

I had a similar problem recently and I think ths should work. Go to the bootdisk website and download the 98 boot disk, boot up to the DOS prompt and then type in "fdisk", delete the non dos partition and create a new partition using all the available disk space.
Restart the machine with the boot disk again and type "format c:" and format the drive.
Once you have done this you should be able to restore your operating system.
Let us know how you do.
