Default DVD playback problems

My PC was playing dvd's just fine the other day, just tried to play one now and it loads up fine, the picture is fine and the music plays but there's no voice, or if there is it is very very very faint and that's with the volume right up and it sounds distroted.

I've googled it to see if I could find what has gone wrong but I got nothing. I've tried multiple dvd's to check it wasn't a damaged disc and both my dvd drives but still no voice.

What could have caused this?

I'm very confused as all other sounds work fine, and i can get voice when I watch a video on my hard drive.

Thanks

Which application do you use to view your Dvd's ...for example PowerDVD , Interactual Player etc..... If the only time you experience Sound problems is with your particular dvd play back ( Maybe its Windows Media player???) , try a free dvd playback download and see if it works fine..

have you made any recent hardware changes such as your Sound Card. etc...

Make sure that all of your Playback Volume options are turned up and not muted.... For Xp ....Go to Start> Control Panel> Sounds and Audio Devices and then hit advanced under the Device Volume box, then check all of your sliders are turned up and nothing has been muted......

Hi rjh04,

Welcome to Pc Help Forum!

In addition to NimbleSloths suggestion, can you tell us about the DVD? Is it a DVD you have used without problems in the past or is it a first timer? Also, is it a genuine DVD?

This is a dvd, i've used before in the same drive and it worked fine. I've tried to play it in Real Player, Windows Media Player and the Nero one I have. Don't think I have power DVD installed at the moment.

Just check the control panel and a all seems well there.

And I havn't made any hardware changes lately so I don't understand why it's fine one day then later that week it won't play dvd's.

Scouse

The DVD's I have tried to play are all bought but I have used them before on this computer with no problems in the past, as recently as a couple of days ago, which is why I'm very confused.

Now I'm very confused. I have tried several more dvd's and most don't have any voice but some work fine.

Also I have tried some videos I have on DVDR's and the same happens, most don't have voice but some do.

I've checked the discs and none of them are damaged.

Could something be corrupt somewhere?

Why does the music play fine but the vioces don't?

And how can it affect only most not all of the dvds?

Thanks

Strange, id surely recommend making sure your system is not infected with a virus or spyware....

Then , maybe check your device manager, click on view, and then view hidden devices and check to see if you see any Yellow or Red marks there....

Id highly recommend following the Prework link under Scouse's signature.....

Just done a clean up of my computer and follwed the prework guide

Got ride of a bit of spyware/cookies but still no luck on the dvd front.

I've got my log from the hijackthis program suggested in the prework guide, which I have attached as it said to do.

File Type: txt hijackthis.txt (9.2 KB, 2 views)

ok, clearly this is more of a sound problem now

I have 6.1 speakers, which have always worked fine untill this week

When I play music I only get it through the front left and right speakers and the sub.

When I play games I just get it through the rear 3, no sub.

And when I play dvd's, no voice.

What could cause such a problem?
