Default Paging File Error and other Qs

Hi

I just reformated and reinstalled XP Pro on my computer which has an 80 Gig hard drive. I followed the instructions on how to partition the drive. My drives are labeled a bit differently as I have an external hard drive which is called D and my DVD-CD Rom drive is E. So the new partitions are F, G and H.

I sized the Paging file according to instructions, but when I went in to manage it, it said there was 1019 of space instead of the 1024 I indicated. Okay . . . I simply put that number in, but got a message saying there wasn't enough room to do this. Said I needed at least 5MB of space free. So I knocked it down to 1014. Still got the message of low disk space. Went to 1000 and finally to 900 and am still getting the error message. How can I fix this?

Also, since I did some of this late last night . . . or rather early this morning . . . I didn't grasp all what I read to do in the instructions. I installed all my drivers, but with the camera and printer drivers, I let all the programs install with it. (Then I went to bed. ) This morning when I reread the instructions intending to do the boot to SM and defrag, and go on, I see that I should have probably not loaded the extra programs when I did. Should I uninstall them before going on or can I just move them to H when I'm guessing programs belong now?

When I install my programs on the H drive, will my programs show up in the program filles or do I move that folder now to H? The instructions don't really say anything about this.

Thanks!

Howdy NeenahD,
It seems like the directions for that is to make your page partition 5120 then when the partition is done set the page file to 1024 then there will be enough room.

Thanks for the quick reply asa_sniper!

In the instructions, 5120 is stated for the document and internet explorer temp files partition. Should this one be bigger as well, or is it okay as it is? 1024 is what it says to use for paging files unless your hard drive is smaller than 40 G.

How do I resize the paging file? If by the format option, it's grayed out for this drive. It is enabled in all the others.

I did go ahead and uninstall the programs that installed with my drivers before I defragged.

Okay, I couldn't do anything with changing this, so I just reinstalled XP, deleted all the new partitions and started over. Since XP suggested a paging file of 1520, I used that figure, but set to 1024 later. It took it without a problem.

I moved My Documents and the Temp files to their new locations--giving more space to this drive as most of my stuff is saved here.

And, my other question is, what would happen if I moved the program files to drive F. (When I reinstalled this time, the computer put the drives all in the order they should be in. Very nice! )

Okay, probably a dumb question. I'm one who needs a bit more info on using the F: drive for installing new programs. What is recommended? A Programs file of sorts to install them all into, or a free for all, just install to each individual folder type thing? OR . . . it doesn't really matter which you choose, XP will perform just as well either way, it's just a matter of personal preference. Now that I'm all organized here, I need to decide how best to use it. I have to admit, though, after repairing XP the first time, I missed my files showing up in the Programs Files . . .

Just a wonder . . . I'm sure I'll adapt!

This looks promising...I have never used it, but if it works as claimed--it could save some grief.

Sure easiest way is to "when yor installing" a program is to let it go into directory D. Thats where all your program fkes will be. You miss seeing your program files hu lol. I like alot of partitions as well. Makes defragin and other stuff alot easier and quicker to find things.
