Default Mysterious small text file

Just noticed something new in past couple of days. Each time I boot my XP SP-2 PC a small 255 byte file named WGAerrlog.txt is generated and placed in the C:\Temp folder, which is usually empty but is there for temporary storage of any file(s) I might want to place there. When I look at the contents of WGAerrlog.txt, it is a bunch of alphnumeric characters with a hyphen every once in a while. Resembles memory address.

Any ideas what app/program is placing this file there??

All help and guidance in stopping this nonsense much appreciated.

Podner

Hi Podner and welcome to PCHF,
The file is most likely created by a problem with the windows registry permissions, (and placed there by windows update, the 'do you have a legal version of windows tool') please try the following:
1. Click Start, and then click Run
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK
3. Expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Locate the subkey HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck
5. Right-click the subkey and select Permissionsâ?¦.
6. Ensure that Administrators allowed Full Control permission
7. Repeat steps 3-6 for the subkey
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\LegitCheckControl.LegitCheck.1

Good luck, Bram

Hi Bram,

Followed your guidance above and Administrator is allowed full control in both these subkeys.

Another thought?

Ouch, nice one... Hmmz, don't really know how to remove the key then. There has been an ongoing microsoft newsgroup discussion about this problem, but this is the only solution offered sofar....

You're welcome, I hope someone else knows a little more then I do, but I fear the worst.... But I'm real curious now about the what and why of the file. I only know it's placed there by windows udpate, but there the info stops...

Hi Podner,

Welcome to the forums!

Have you installed or downloaded anything recently? Have you ran a virus/spyware scan? Also, you might want to try a reg cleaner. It's possible (speaking from personal experience) that you may have been infected - thus resulting in your license key being affected. When this happened to me, I had to do a fresh install as I caught it too late. Can you run a Hijack This scan and post attatch your log for us to look into? http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip

Hope this helps.
