Default Monitor screen suddenly turns black

Hi
My Monitor screen suddenly turns black at random times. Sometimes this happens when I am working on it and sometimes when I have left it for some time and come back to see it having turned black. At this point, moving the mouse doesn't work and if I press the Caps lock button it doesn't light up on its receiver. I have to restart the computer to get it to work again. I have checked the screen saver and I have it off. I changed the Power Scheme settings to "Never" for everything. The screen refresh rate is set at 60 Hz. At first I thought that the problem was with the monitor and I got a new one but the problem is still occurring. Would appreciate some suggestions. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum,

Sounds like you may have hibernate enabled on that PC. To switch off hibernate (and then test) do the following;

1) Right click on a blank bit of desktop
2) Select properties
3) Screensaver tab
4) Click the "power" button
5) Hibernate tab
6) Un-tick the hibernate option and click ok to exit

Now leave you PC un-attended and see if the problem persists.

Hi Hengis

I don't think hibernation is the problem since the hibernation check box has always been unchecked.

What power settings do you currently have enabled? Also, what service pack do you have ?

I have service pack 2 and the Power scheme is set to Home/Office Desk with Turn off monitor, turn off hard disks and system standby all set to Never.

There's a great Microsoft resource relating to this problem HERE. Work thru the resolutions and post your results here.
