Default [Fixed] - Super Annoying Problem

Ok , first ill post my Pc specs..

Dell 4600

Windows Xp Home Edition w/ Service Pack 2 and all express updates

4600i MotherBoard

1.57 Gigs DDR RAM

2.79 Pentium 4 CPU

Evga Nvidia 6600 LE Graphics Card

Intel Pro/ 100 VE Network Connection

Alltel Dsl 3 meg

My system is deemed clean by Mcafee , Spyware Doctor, and my registry is supposedly ok with Registry Mechanic...

My problem, whenever I enable or disable my Dsl connection, my computer becomes totally unresponsive for more than 5 minutes. No matter which program I try to open nothing responds, untill 5 minutes or so later everything responds at once. Looking at CPU usage it maxes out at 100 % for a bit then returns to normal.....

Besides that time after enabling or disabling ( I often disable it so I can turn off my Virus, Firewall and Spyware to play games) I never have any crashes or lock ups...

Any clue as to what the **** is going on???

I think that may be your computer trying to renew it's IP Address - How do you disable the DSL Connect? Do you do it from the control panel or the box?

Hey there NimbleSloth

When your CPU reaches 100% could you check in Task manager, under processes and tell us which process is using the most CPU. normally around 99%

I right click on the desktop icon I made for the Internet Connection, and it has the Enable / Disable option.

Ill have to leave the Task manager open to see which process takes the most, since when everything stops responding the Task Manager wont show up untill everything is back to normal.

Nimblesloth, do you use any modem/router which is 'always on'/gives you a internal ip adress?
Sounds weird, but it comes down to this, is your ip-adress in the range of 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x? You can check this by doubleclicking on the network icon and choosing support (tab)
When you have a address in that range, try forcing an ip
1. Write down all data shown at the support tab (ip/dns/gateway)
2. Choose 'properties', the 'first tab'
3. Select tcp/ip->properties
4. Check 'use the following ip-address'
5. Enter the ip address you wrote down earlier and the dns and gateway addresses (leave alternative dns blank)
6. Apply->ok

Now see if the system hangs again when you disable/enable your dsl

Good luck, Bram
