Default XP "Searching for primary master - hit F4 to abort" upon boot

I had 2 HD's but one went out - it was my primary slave, second boot device. I removed it. I had it set to boot from the other one already. It is jumpered as master. After I removed the bad HD - everytime I boot it stalls to "search for primary master." It eventually boots fine but this is annoying.

I hit F11 and my HD is set as the 1st boot device, but in bios - it doesn't list my HD at all in order to choose a first boot device. What happened?

Thanks for any help

Hi there and welcome to PCHF

Did you check the boot order in your bios and also whether the old drive still shows up in the list of drives (maybe it was added manually).

On wich connector on IDE1 is the remaining HD attached? It should be on the connector at the end of the cable for the master position.

And how is the remaining HD being detected in youre bios? As on the primairy or secondairy IDE , and as master or slave?

In bios it doesn't appear in any of the 4 boot device choices. But when I hit F11 at start up it is set as the first boot device. Weird. The IDE ribbon master is going to the only HD I have, I removed the bad HD. Went into disk management under Ctrl panel/Admin and it appears as primary partition. The HD is set as master as was before.

Have you tried to manually add it to the bootorder?
