Default Windows Media Player Stopped Playing Sound!

Hi

Im running XP sp2 and windows media player 10.

I have downloaded desperate housewives and have watched them fine, then the other day WMP started to say that there was an error downloading the codec and then it plays without sound.
I have tried everything from downloading XVID, DIVX, GSPOT and even re-installing WMP.
I canty understand why all of a sudden they have stopped playing, can anyone PLEASE help me??!?!?

Hi Ryan (I used to work with someone called Ryan Cox) Welcome to the site.

THIS should cure your codec woes.

Try removing WMP and re-installing it.

Control panel > add/remove programs > windows components (on the left) > un-tick WMP > ok and exit. Reverse the process to re-install it.

...another thing to check - is your Internet Explorer security setting @ medium?

Ok, next thing to try is to uninstall ALL codecs from add/remove programs AND use a registry cleaner to get rid of the remnants: http://www.macecraft.com/regsupreme/

When you have done that re-install only the codec I posted above.

If that doesn't help you could try this tool:

http://www.free-codecs.net/download/BigFix.htm

Some of the fixes included it deals with:

- Green video
- Video that stops after a short period
- Corrupt video
- Crashes in WMP
- Downgrading from DivX Pro 5.1
- Registration problems with Dr DivX
- Echoing or Reverberating sound in Dr DivX
- Crashing or unexpected stops in Dr DivX
- Reduced DV resolution when encoding to DivX
- DivX encoder not appearing on list of compressors
- Errors in registry or INI files

The list goes on...

READ THIS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING! IT'S IMPORTANT!

The Big Fix is provided as a quick and easy way for DivX users to fix the most common problems associated with the DivX codec.
These fixes will typically reconfigure, disable or remove third party software which is known to interfere with normal use of the DivX decoder, DivX Pro and Dr DivX software, as well as checking aspects of your system configuration for correctness.
The "Dr DivX" section contains options for removing many filters that have the *potential* to interfere with Dr DivX. This does not necessarily mean that they *will* interfere with Dr DivX. Some filters here may be required by other software on your system.

Or if everything else failse , AND ONLY THEN give this a try:
