Default Frustrating USB Device Problem

Okay, here's the deal:

I have a Sony PSP which is a Mass Storage Device. I plug it in and the computer installs it no problem then says it's ready to be used. I go to My Computer and there no trace of it...

The device is installed on Windows XP Professional SP2. All Windows updates are installed. It worked properly until I did a System Restore to 3 days before which didn't work the way it usually does because it removed my desktop image and removed my desktop icons but all my files and everything were alright. Not sure what went wrong there. (Ran repair from boot CD after the restore just to be safe)

I can go to the Device Manager and I can see Mass Stoage Device, it says they're working properly.

So, here's where it gets wierd: I can go into Disk Management and I can SEE the device plugged in, and there's no drive letter assigned. Okay, easy enough, just assign a drive letter. (In this case it's F, as it's not in use by anything else) So I go into My Computer, it still ain't there. Also, when I reboot the computer or remove and replace the device, it will no longer have a drive letter, I have to assign it all over again.

I go back to the Disk Management and right-click on the Mass Storage drive and hit 'open'.

Bingo, it opens. (Halellujah) I can see all the files, and I can change them, open them, etc... But I still can't get to it in any other way. I type f:\ in Windows Explorer, but it says there is no such drive. Stupid Windows...

Anyway, even if I can get at the files, it's still very inconvenient. I'd much appreciate some help here, if anyone's got any ideas. Plus when I try to put a file in there with a long name it says it does not support long file names or something. It does the same thing with a file extention over 4 characters.

Here's most of the stuff I've tried to do to fix it, but didn't work:

~Uninstall USB Drivers, then reinstall
~Repair from Boot CD
~Uninstall/Reinstall device drivers (It never works, but it's always worth a shot)
~Unplug computer for an hour (I was desperate, and someone said it would work.)
~Try different USB ports
~Smack it :knock:
~Smack it again :unch:
~Leave it alone for a day, then try again later (It's worked for me before!)
~A really long and pointless list of commands in cmd that Microsoft said should fix it.

None of them worked, I tried all of them except for actually buying a new USB card.

So, please give me any suggestions! Or if you've had a similar problem, then tell me what you did to fix it! (I'm not willing to do a fresh install, but if that worked for you then tell me at least)

Hi Steeles,

Welcome to PCHF!

I don't own a PSP myself, and never tried connecting one. However, I found this discussion which should solve your problem. There are quite a few solutions offered. Hope this helps.

You have any other USB storage devices? Any you could borrow from a freind?

To at least find out if it's the PSP's way of connecting, or something to do with your COMPUTER's way of connecting. I'm betting there's a screw loose somewhere, there's some code missing or something stupid, and it's microsofts fault.

Also: Try connecting the PSP to a different computer.

I know none of this actually FIXES the problem, but at least it tells us where to point the guns.

The thing is it works on my macs and my friends computer but not mine. It's not like my computer is not recognizing it because it is. It just won't show up in My Computer so I have no access to it. Like I said before, it worked until I did that system restore. When I plugged it in after the system restore the first time it said, New hardware found PSP Mass Storage Device, then it said it was installed and ready to be used but when I went into My Computer it was not there. It showed up as Removable Disk ( E: )before the restore. What could've happened during the restore that would cause this problem?

Give this a try , maybe it helps:

Go to start/run and type sfc /scannow and press enter. Make sure you have youre XP cd in youre drive and it will look for missing and/or damaged windows files.

Already tried that... I honestly don't think there is anything I can do anymore.
