Hey folks,
I've got another audio problem - whoopee! I first noticed this when attempting to open an e-mail greeting card with sounds that I knew were supposed to be playing...and after tinkering with my volume controls, checking that my speakers were plugged in ect. I still did not have any luck. I then began to notice that none of the sounds in Windows were working at all (ie. when booting up or shutting down windows, when plugging in external hardware, MSN alerts ect.) I checked my settings in Sound and Audio Devices and everything appears to be normal.
Figuring it was a simple sound card problem, I tried playing some songs in my ITunes library, which strangely enough, worked just fine. I then put in a DVD and also tried watching some videos that I had on my computer and the audio was working with those as well.
My soundcard is Crystal SoundFusion CS4281. I've run a number of scans and my computer appears to be virus, spyware, malware free. Has anybody even heard of this problem or have any suggestions as to what it could be? I worry that this seemingly small issue may be at the root of a potentially bigger problem.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Try this first just to make sure your sound card is working:
Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. Double-click System. Click the Device Manager tab. Click the PLUS SIGN (+) next to Sound, video and game controllers to expand the branch. Under the Sound, video and game controllers branch, click your sound card, and then click Properties. On the General tab, make sure that the Device Status message is "this device is working properly."

Your system seem to work fine with other programs, please check if there was any audio recorded with the person who sent that greeting card. Maybe they missed something out.

Hey guys,
Thank you for your suggestions. Terror - I tried this and my sound card does appear to be working properly, as it says "this device is working properly". I also hunted around a bit more and I can find no evidence that something it wrong with my sound card. Predator - I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but my friend did not record the sound on the greeting card...it was from a Hallmark site or something along those lines. I know there was supposed to be sound coming from it because she said "Check out the sounds in this card". Heh. My real worry is in the fact that none of the sounds in Windows are playing, and I know I did not change any settings so I don't understand why this would have happened. Any other ideas? AR. |

It is possible that it is a problem with WAV sounds. looking through the windows directory the sounds are wav and on most e-greetings they would be WAV as well. I recommend that you reinstall your sounds drivers/codecs as there may be a corrupt file or codec. or you could try a 3rd party WAV codec.
