Default Error Checking when transfering files

I have a couple of new usb hard drives. I use them for storage for music and movies. I had a similar setup about a year ago useing internal hard drives. I recall that I had lots of problems with the intergraty of the data when I would transfer files to the storage drive and then either transfer them to another media/storage or attempted to use the files from that drive. I will freely admit that the hard drive in question ended up failing but I would like to prevent the possibility of data corruption when transfering files. Is there a data checker option when transfering files other then the scandisk or checkdisk? I know that when I burn cd's or dvd's there is an option in many of the buring programs that will check the integraty of the data to ensure that the burn was done correctly. I just want to make sure I dont lose any bits or bytes when I transfer files to and from my drives. 1 or 2 missing bits on a 2 gig avi can really mess up the file or the song.

Thx in advance.

After a little more research I have considered the following:

Could it be that the reason my files became damaged on my last drive was because the file table or something along those lines was damaged and causeing the data transfers to be inaccurate? I suppose I already know the answer to that, but let me put it another way. If both my local drive and my storage usb drives are healthy, is it possible to lose data or get corrupted data when transfering files to and from these drives? ATA drives claim to have a CRC check that ensures data transfers are correct. My USB drive is an ultra ata drive boxed into a usb external kit. Does it still offer the same kind of CRC checking when transfering files? I am just looking for reassurance that this setup is not going to lose one single byte during transfers.

Thx again.

Welcome to PCHF.

To test your theories, why not try to transfer the data from the USB sticks to another PC. That way you can eliminate the PC being the problem
