Default old E Machines W/ 98 convert to XP home?

Hey Y'all

This one ought to either flex someone brain by Laughter or sheer terror LOL

I have a old E machines that has been butchered up by a few hacks before I got my new one {that I'm learning on now}
I would like to change a few things so I can inventory my tools

{disabled former auto mechanic}

This is what I have:

E machines 466MHz "is" intel Celeron processor

32MB + 128 added memory

128KB L2 cache [66MHz system bus]

4.3 hard drive {c drive}
a added 40 G hard drive Samsung {e drive}

40X CD ROM

3D AGP graphics 4mb video

56K fax modem

also a cable modem

now one of the butchers {years ago} that called herself a master tech installed windows XP Pro on the 4.3 HD so that every time I try to download something it wants to crash

I think that the "XP" ate up all the space on "C" drive & wont auto to the "E" drive

Can I switch the 40HD & the 4.3HD and install XP on the 40 so I can put this POS in my tool box & be able to take photos & make notes on the photos {I have the XP disk}
then down load to my 1 G flash drive to put it on the good PC {this one} & then be able to burn it to disk Or maybe put a burner in it to burn right there.

I'm very confident i will never use this for the internet

I was trying to do this low budget if possible if this is possible at all.

well give it to me straight try to keep the profanity to a minimum LOL

and as always

Thank You in Advance

E machines 466MHz "is" intel Celeron processor + 128 added memory + Windows XP

Those specs are cutting it very fine with the "minimum" requirments for XP.

In response to your question, YES it will be possible to load Windows XP onto that 40GB hard drive and use it as your master.
  • Firstly you will need to backup anything on that drive that you want to keep.
  • Change the jumper setting to master and connect it to the first IDE slot (IDE-O in theory)
  • Boot off your XP disc and format/install windows.
Obviously once windows is installed you can connect your 4.3 GB drive, but first you need to set the jumper to slave on it.
Copy any files/folders you need off it and then you can format it and use it as a "spare" drive.

In theory you shouldn't need to spend anything, you should be able to do all this from home without needing to purchase anything, however your system will still run pretty slow.

Hope this helps

Thanks Zimbo!
I really don't know ho to do any of these things .
as far as the 4.3 it really does not have to be reinstalled.

Let me see . . . changing the jumper slot.. that would be the flat ribbon wire with the 2 connections that goes from HD to HD?
hook that up so that the 40 is in the #1 position?

I have been unsuccessful in getting it to boot up .do I need to wipe it clean?
I took all the info I wanted off of that drive. with the flash drive.

So what would I do to speed it up?

Is a simple fix or not worth the time & effort?

I have another tower but I have no clue if it even works cant even ID it LOL

I just need it to save from making a lot of notes & walking back & forth from my tool box to home

Thanks sooo much

Take a look at this tutorial, its not the exact thing you want but it explains how to change jumpers:

As per the tutorial the jumper is that little (normally) black pin, move it to the master slot (if its not already there)

For the moment disconnect your 4.3 drive completely.

Now turn on the machine and boot into your BIOS, you can normally do this by pressing DEL or F2 when your machine starts up.

Change the boot order so that your PC boots from CDROM first.

Once you have done that, save changes and exit, place your XP CD in the drive and it should boot into the setup.

Let us know if you make it to this stage.
So what would I do to speed it up?

Unfortunately this system is extremely old and will be very hard to find any parts for it. You would be wasting a lot of time and effort.

Well i changed the flat wire to the 40 g & the power lead there is no slave /master wire anywhere to be found ?

It will power up go to the e machines logo then to a black screen that has a bunch of stuff on it at the bottom it says searching for boot record from IDE-0..OK
NTLDRis missing
press Ctlr+ alt+del to restart but nothing happens when I put the disk in

I must be doing something wrong in the bios?

There is no separete wire for master and slave , it is the location on the cable that is master or slave. If you connct the 40gb to the second connector on the cable , the one at the end of the cable , then it is on the master position.

Did you change the jumper (little plastic black plug) on the back of the 40gb HD to the master position? You have to change the cable location and the jumper on the back of the HD.

Also is the boot order in youre bios setup to boot from cd?
