Default Laptop Randomly Crashing?

I just recently bought a new laptop (well, it was off ebay, but it was is new condition). Anyway, I let my brother use it- big mistake. When I got it back, it had a buch of junk on it, and whenever I turned it on, it came up with a bunch of error messages. It shut down Generic Hose for Win 32 Services ( I think that was its name) and svchost as well. However, the biggest thing I noticed is that Norton wouldnt recieve any updates. Live Update said it was corrupted. I didnt see this as much of a problem, so I just left it.
Today, I was using it, just surfing the internet, and it just suddenly shut off. No matter what I've tried, it wont turn back on. Was this the work of a virus, or did something internally in my laptop fail?

Thanks a ton,
Connor707

Hey there Connor707,

I don't think a virus would be able to destroy your laptop to this degree, but at this day in age anything is possible.

Could you try a couple of things for us:
  1. Remove the battery from your laptop, then plug your AC power in and try to turn it on, does it turn on?
  2. Try hold down the power button for around 5 seconds, do any lights turn on or turn off?
  3. Do you get any lights e.g power light, hard drive led ??

Hi Connor707!

How did it shut off? Did you got a black screen in a second, or was Windows closing down first?
Also, where you using the laptop on it's battery?

Blue

Thanks for the responses guys!
@Zimbo:1. I tried that, it didnt change anything, it still wont boot up.
2.When I hold down the power button, nothing changes
3.There is one light that is always on, its the Power light. It is constantly flashing orange (it usually is green). However, this light is on even when its not plugged into the power cord. It is the only one I can get to turn on, and it wont turn off.

@Bluefish:I wasjust surfing the web, and the mouse froze for a few seconds, and then it just went black. There was no Windows Screen, it just died. I had the battery in, but it was plugged in, so I wasnt using the battery.

Thanks a million,
Connor707

It sounds like it could possibly be a processor/motherboard problem.

However, this light is on even when its not plugged into the power cord. It is the only one I can get to turn on, and it wont turn off.
Can you ever get the light to turn off, e.g disconnect the power cord, if the light is still on try holding down the power button until it turns off.
Once it has turned off try turn the laptop back on.

Nope, there isnt any way to turn it off, except by removing the battery. When I do that, nothing works (obviously). I can then either a)plug it in without the battery or b) put the battery back in and press the power button, but when I do, 3 lights flash green for a second, then the orange one just comes back on and flashes.
