Default can't access safe mode in xp

I put this computer together about 6 months ago. Installed xp and have never been able to get into safe mode. I push f8 to get to safe mode, choose it, then it looks like it is trying to load a lot of drivers. After that the computer starts to boot. It stops before it gets to windows and says that windows was unable to start. It then gives me a choce of safe mode, sm with networking, sm with command prompt, last known config. etc., start windows normally. None of the safe mode choices will get me to safe mode. They bring me back to this same screen. Can someone explain what is happening?

Hi tadpole1954!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

This sounds very strange, I understand that you're able to load in Normal Mode without any problems?

Could be that your vital drivers are corupt/missing. Try a reinstallation of windows major files.

I think the XP cd can do this..

You can also try a NON destructive reinstallation. This will keep all your files but will reinstall windows files.

What pc model do you have. If you have compaq your lucky here.
