Default [Fixed] Even IBM are scratching their heads

I have contacted IBM regarding this, but they have never heard of such a problem.

On an IBM Thinkcentre (6 months old), using XP Pro, Windows starts up fine, as does Word and Adobe Reader. I can right click on my computer and access management, also can use the run command. However, most other desktop shortcuts don't respond. I have tried using the start menu, but clicking on my computer, help and support, control panel etc, all of these appear to start as the menu disappears and the cursor displays an egg timer for a short time. But nothing opens.

There are no error messages.

CTRL+ALT+DEL brings up the task list. There is nothing in the applications tab, however, the processes do appear in the processes tab. They are using memory but not CPU usage, the only thing using up the CPU is the system idle process.

We have McAffee anti virus which is up to date too. Does anyone have any ideas?

Will I have to ask IBM for some recovery disks?

This could be malware related, can you follow on the Prework instructions here:

Your pre-work link doesn't work. I assume you are wanting a HJT log.

Unfortunately, because "Internet Explorer" and "My Computer" won't open on that machine, I am unable to install anything.

You could use a floppie or cd-rw to copy Hjt , Ewido and Ccleaner to that pc and then try to run them trough ctrl,alt,del/file/new task (run).

And you can use the Prework link below in my sig.

But first give this a try to check for missing or corrupted windows files , ctrl,alt,del/file/new task (run) and type: sfc /scannow , and press enter. Have youre XP cd in youre drive and let it run.

Well today I managed to install Spybot and adaware se, but when they run they stop responding. Spybot hangs on the final file having found nothing. Adaware se hangs on a different file everytime, but always within shared DLLs, having found nothing.

The only thing I can do when this happens is to physically switch off the PC.

I have also used the XP Pro disk and ran sfc /scannow.

Nothing has improved.

Here is the HJT log:

Removed, please post HJT logs as attachement to your post.
Added as an attachement.

I am going away for the weekend now, need a break from this nightmare.

Thanking all you kind people in advance.

Doesn't seem to be malware related , Spybot and Adaware apparently dont find anything and youre hjt log is clean.

Maybe it is time to try an repair install , you'll keep all youre data but will have to update windows again afterwords.
