Unhappy Laptop does not boot

Good afternoon everybody,

I found this site a couple days ago in a PC World magazine and thought I would see if my problem can get solved. I have a Compaq NX9010 laptop that is running Windows XP Pro. The problems sarted about 2 weeks ago. I would turn it on and login just fine and I started getting the "BSOD" with stop messages anywhere from a few seconds to maybe 5 minutes after logging in. The messages would not be the same every time. I contacted HP support that had me run through the basic troubleshooting steps ( check disk, ad ware, virus scan)things like that. They had me try starting in safe mode, which did not work, also Last known good configuration did not work, Debugging mode did not work. I kept getting the BSOD. Now the problem is when I try to start this thing, I get a blank screen, and one of the fans runs for a few seconds and stops or it keeps running. I am a loss as to what is wrong. I have tried everything I can think of. Oh one other thing, this computer was a gift from my wife and she cannot find any of the disks (Windows XP was preloaded), so any disks I need it looks like I am going to have to go to bootdisk.com to get (I figured that out from reading some of the other posts). If it turns out that I need to format the drive and reinstall Windows, there are pictures I would like to keep if anybody can tell me how to get to them.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. If you need any more info, please let me know. I havve most of the specs written down and all the stop messages written down as well. I just forgot to bring them with me.

Hi there and welcome to PCHF

I am surprised that they didn't investigate the fact that this could all be attributed to over-heating! Do you know how to get into the bios screens? If you do, great - run the laptop until it crashes then re-boot and go straight into the bios and check the PC Health (normally) section and look at the temperatures of your CPU and motherboard.

Of course, if you don't know how to get into the bios, just ask

Thank you for the response. I do know how to get to the BIOS screen but do not know how to check the temp however, the computer will not get that far. The only thing that I get is the power light is on, the one of the fans runs, and a blank screen. That is it. HP had wanted me to run a system dianostic when their logo came up after I had told them that all I get is a blank screen. They sent me a list of things to do to see what happens. They suspect that it is a voltage converter board issue and would have to be sent in.

I am in Hondarus (US military) and it worked the first week I got here. It got pretty warm, but I don't think it got hot enough to shut down, maybe it did. Any suggestions how to fix this?

Default Repair

Hi JDrisc3480,

Unfortunately this does sound very much like some sort of hardware failure, power/voltage board failures although unusual do happen occasionally. The heat issue could also be a factor. What sort of humidity are you working in as this could have an effect on the system.
I would get the system back to them for repair as I don't think that you will be able to do anything wihout opening the system up.
Let us know how you get on.

It has been humid here but the air conditioner in the room has been on constantly. If the power/voltage board is failing would the computer still turn on?

I have seen some systems that will power briefly and then shut down, apparently this is due to the parts overloading only after a small amount of power has gone through. This usually means a motherboard/powerboard replacement.

Sorry it has been so long since I posted. My wife took the laptop to a repair place last week and first the guy said that it was a fried processor, but when he put a new one in, it got fried so he thinks now it might be the motherboard. This guy is not sounding like he really knows what he is doing so she is going to take is some place else.

Thank to everybody that tried to help with this

Jim
