Default can no longer access msconfig

I have used msconfig to see what starts up automaticaly when I turn the computer on. The last time I tried to access msconfig I got this window message. "An access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes" I am the only person to use(or ever used) this computer. I have always been on the administrator log in. I was not trying to make any changes, I was just trying to see what was on msconfig. I have not made any major changes that I am aware off and I have no idea why I get this message, or why it will not let me get into msconfig. I would appreciate any available help.

Thank you.

Hi Oldcoot,

Welcome to PCHF. We have a wonderful team of techs here, and I am sure that we will be able to get you access back to your MSCONFIG.

Let's start by ruling out malware as a culprit. Can you please carefully follow the instructions for PreWork in my signature, then post back the ewido and HijackThis log here.

Look forward to your reply,

TTFN

to ladygreenwitch - thank you for responding to my question that i entered last month. I tried to follow your directions, but it quickly became apparent to me that i had no idea of what i was doing. i did the atf-cleaner thing but when i got to the ewido page i had no idea what it was talking about. thank you for your time. i seem to be able to get along without msconfig working in my machine so i will just go without it.

thank you for your response and help.

Hi Oldcoot,

Welcome back! Sorry you got lost with the ewido instructions. Unfortunately, the fact that your MSCONFIG is missing, is a sign of something else wrong with your computer, and ignoring it could be disastrous later on.

Why don't you try this for me, rerun CCleaner, just like before. Then, (I am assuming that you were able to download ewido,) run ewido, don't worry about all of the other instructions, just tell it to ignore everything that it finds, and (this is the important part) save the log report to your desktop.

Then run HJT choosing to save a log file. Then post both of them back here, and we will be able to direct you to the next step.

Looking forward to your reply,

TTFN
