Default [Resolved]keyboard fails when windows starts

The keyboard works OK before Windows starts--I can go to F12, F2, etc. But when Windows starts the mouse comes alive and the keyboard dies. So I can't log in. This began--of course--as soon as I created a password for the default login. Since there are no other users I can't get into the system at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. ASAP.

Hey there Jodido,
  • I assume you are using windows xp correct?
Try booting into safemode and either disable your password or uninstall your keyboard from device manager.
Then reboot and see if it works.
  • Are you using a USB or PS2 keyboard?
If it still doesn't work then when it gets to the login screen try to unplug it and re-plug it in, see if it starts working.
  • Do you have any other keyboards in the house?

Thanks for the fast reply. Yes, it's XP Home. Booting into safe mode doesn't help, still requires a login and keyboard is still disabled. Disconnecting/reconnecting doesn't help either. It's a PS2 keybd and unfortunately no other keybd around. This must have something to do with the password I set up. Is there a way to get around the password? I don't have a password reset disk for the malfunctioning system but I do have a laptop w/ XP Pro, would that work?

It sounds like your XP home computer needs to "install" the keyboard within windows, very strange but possible.

Unfortunately the laptop won't be of much use I don't think.

Have you tried choosing "Last known Good configuration" from the F8 menu at startup?

Hmm, sounds like some Windows silliness.

I'll mark this as [Resolved], but feel free to post back if you're keyboard acts up again.
