Default XP "Stop Device" window on startup

On system bootup, I get a "Stop Device" window that states, "This Application will not run in this Operating System". I got this window for the first time after installing a driver for an old HP scanner. I removed the driver but I continue to get the window on each startup. How do I get rid of this window?

Hya Ken , welcome to PCHF.

Have a look if it is still listed in youre device manager:

In youre start menu , rightclick "my computer" and select "properties" , then on the "hardware" tab press "device manager".
If the scanner is still listed there then remove it.

Or have a look in start/run/msconfig and look on the "startup" and "services" tabs to see if it is listed there , if yes remove the tick infront of it and press apply.

Default "Stop Device"

Many thanks for your suggestions. However, no joy.

I could find no references to the old HP program in any of the places you suggested I look. I've still got the problem.

Its not serious - just irritating and I'll live with it for now.

Again, Thanks

Can you post an Hijackthis log file? See below for a link.
Maybe there is something showing from it in there.
