Default [Resolved] failed XP boot & Corrupt system files

Hi, A few days ago my son was playing guildwars when the pc restarted but only got as far as the error message " XP failed to load C:\windows\system32\config\system It said the file was corrupted and to load the O/S disc choose setup and choose repair option. I did all that but then I thought I could expand the system file/s from the cd drive which was now H: but I coulntnt find the directory on the cd drive with the XP installation disc in to do it. In the end I reformatted the Hard drive and put everything back on. I would be very grateful If somebody could tell me correct way to restore the correct files from the disc if it ever happens again.

Thanks for your reply Bluefish, I did try using repair from the windows XP pro CD But I only got as far as loading the reapir console and accessing C:\windows and I think the XP Cd was reading as H:\ but I didnt know how to properly extract the correct file from or even where on the XP CD. as the error was for a corrupt file in C:\windows\system32\config\system, would it be just the main system file that was corrupted? and if so would an extraction of the clean system file on the XP cd resore the o/s?. I would be extremely grateful for your help to prevent my having to reformat/reload everything due to a similar occurance.
Regards Mike

You could give these instructions a try:

http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;en-us;307545&

But you can also do a repair install of windows , that would probebly be easier:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

What you described is the recovery console , not an repair install. But with the instruction in the page above it should be easy.
