Default IDE Hard Drive Error

So i have a pc with an SATA WD hard drive. recently something went wrong and now theres an error loading the operating system. Well before i reinstall it, I wanted to retrieve some important files... through a different hard drive. I want to hook up one of my other IDE hard drives and set my SATA as a slave, then get all the documents that i need.

I have completely disconnected the SATA HDD just to try to connect the IDE one. for some reason however i always get this error message, its a blue screen and white writing:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've bee seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove and newly installed hard drives or hard drive contrllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C46640, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
Ive tried disabling SATA in my bios, tried starting up the computer with 3 diff IDE hard drives that i know are working. tried setting jumpers to different positions... I have no idea what else to do... I built this PC around 2 months ago so the technology is quite up to date. maybe im overlooking something in the bios... I have no idea. my mother board is ASUS A8N-SLI Premium... can anyone please help.

Question Hal

Hi FantasticSnowman,

I presume that the drives you're trying to use, already have Windows XP installed as it sounds like the fact that your HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is different it's causing the blue screen error.
If so how was XP installed? Did you install it using this PC?

Default

The HDDs already have windows installed using different computers. Should I just reinstall the OS using the new PC... I dont care if i lose any data on the IDE drives.

Thumbs up Yes

Yes, go ahead and install the OS from scratch. You always need to install XP from the PC you want to use it on (or the same Model PC)

All the best GromO0
